There are lots of fun dog facts about the different breeds of canines on the internet these days, but we have listed some fun dog facts that may amuse, inform or amaze you! Puppies bring us the joy of childhood while older dogs show us wisdom and courage!

Each breed has unique characteristics and some of the fun dog facts that follow will give you an idea of what identifies one breed from another.

• That whole one year in a dog's life is the equivalent of 7 in a human's isn't exactly true. A more accurate calculation is as follows: At one year, a puppy is the equivalent of 16 human years; at two dog years they are 24 human years; at 3 dog years, 30 human years; and for every dog year after that, add 4 human years.

• When Pompeii destroyed by Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, was finally excavated, searchers found evidence of a dog lying across a child.

• The ancient Chinese royalty loved the Pekingese breed, carrying them tucked into the sleeves of their royal robes.

• Canis Familiaris is the Latin name for canine.

• 800 dogs are destroyed every hour in the US because there are not enough homes for them (thus the importance of spaying/neutering)

• World's smallest dog is a Yorkie from England, 2 years old, and only 2.5 inches tall by 3.75 inches long. He weighs only four ounces and is the size of a matchbox.

• World's heaviest dog is a 3 year old English Mastiff, named Hercules, weighs in at 282 pounds and a paw size of a softball.
